It’s hard to believe that it’s December already! The OSMA team has had a busy first semester, and we know that our member schools have, also.
We’ve had almost 20 yearbooks submitted for annual critiques, and many of those schools have already received their feedback and are utilizing it to strengthen their yearbook-in-progress. Plus, we hosted over 800 students and their advisers at four different fall workshops in October. Check the photo gallery below for some highlights.
As we switch the calendar from 2024 to 2025, the OSMA team is hard at work preparing for an equally busy spring semester!
Contest Registration
Registration for our annual contests is now open! Check out the Contests tab of the website for links and information.
This year, our overall publication critique rubrics received a thorough update, and we’ve streamlined much of the content to reflect the convergence of media programs across the state. After all, good journalism is good journalism, regardless of whether it’s in print or online. We’ve also diversified our contest categories for Newswriting. Instead of one general “newswriting” category, this year you’ll see two different categories – one specifically targeted for news coverage from within your campus or community, and a brand-new category for those of you writing about events happening beyond your community and making unique connections for your audience.
We’ve also added some extra instructions for social media categories, expanded the allowed total running time for broadcast stories, and provided some clarity for our podcast category.
The deadline to register for both individual contests AND overall critiques is Monday, January 27, 2025. We had almost 1300 individual entries and 55 overall publication entries last year, and we are hoping to surpass those numbers this year!
Spring Convention
Finally, save the date for our spring convention on April 11-12, 2025 at Kent State University. We have lots of exciting plans in the works, including extra content on Saturday for schools who are able to stay the night. Registration will be open in mid-January.
Stay tuned for more information, including a Keynote Speaker announcement coming soon!
